Did You Know? Newburgh May Have Been Home to North America’s First Flea Market

If you’ve ever wandered through one of our NVE Flea Outdoor Markets, coffee in one hand and a vintage treasure in the other, you’re actually taking part in a tradition that may be older than you think.

Legend has it that the first flea market in North America was held right here in Newburgh back in 1752. While historians still debate the details, it’s one of our favorite local stories—and honestly, we’d like to think it’s true. It certainly feels fitting.

After all, Newburgh has always been a place where people gather, trade, discover, and tell stories. That’s exactly what a great flea market is all about.

We’ve been carrying on that tradition since opening Newburgh Vintage Emporium in 2014, hosting our NVE Flea Outdoor Markets throughout the season.

What started as a simple way to bring together local vendors has become one of our favorite days of the month. Every market feels a little different. New vendors arrive, old favorites return, and you never quite know what you’ll find.

Our July NVE Flea Outdoor Market takes place on Saturday, July 18, and we’ve got another great lineup planned with more than 25 vendors setting up outside the shop.

Expect everything from antiques and vintage décor to collectibles, handmade goods, art, records, clothing, and all those wonderfully unexpected finds that make flea markets so much fun.

And because treasure hunting works up an appetite, Carmella’s Cucina will be serving up their incredible homemade food while Temple Hill Cafe will be keeping everyone fueled with fresh coffee and specialty drinks throughout the day.

Whether you’re a serious collector searching for that one elusive piece or just looking for a fun Saturday in the Hudson Valley, our flea market is the perfect excuse to slow down, browse, and see what catches your eye.

Who knows—you might even be continuing a Newburgh tradition that’s been going strong for nearly 275 years.

We’ll see you on Saturday, July 18 at Newburgh Vintage Emporium. Come early, grab a coffee, and happy hunting!
